Filmconcert 'Parallel Truths'

Parallel Truths confronts propaganda with music: Alma Quartet plays Shostakovich and Korngold live to images of 'Triumph des Willens', revealing historical contrasts.

Parallel Truths is an impressive film concert in which the Alma Quartet plays live music to images from Triumph des Willens (1935), Leni Riefenstahl's controversial propaganda film for Hitler's NSDAP. The concert highlights the power of propaganda and the dangers of one-sided information.

The film shows Hitler and his party leaders at the NSDAP party convention of 1934, where 360,000 people are mobilized. The German youth, trapped in a hopeless situation, is indoctrinated and prepared for 'Total War'.

Set against these images are the String Quartet No. 3 by Erich Wolfgang Korngold, a Jewish composer who fled the Nazis, and the String Quartet No. 8 by Dmitri Shostakovich, who suffered under Stalin's regime. Their music reflects the victims of dictatorships and World War II.

Known for their expressive playing and innovative approach, the Alma Quartet, consisting of members of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, brings this intense double experience to life.
