The 2007 love epic Atonement, directed by Joe Wright, is based on the 2001 novel of the same name by Ian McEwan. The film won the Academy Award for Best Original Score and was also nominated for Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Supporting Actress (Saoirse Ronan, who also won a Golden Globe and a BAFTA), Best Art Direction, and Best Costume Design. Atonement also won more than forty other awards, including Golden Globes for Best Drama and Best Original Score, BAFTAs for Best Film and Best Production Design, a Satellite Award for Best Adapted Screenplay, and a World Soundtrack Award for Best Original Score.

The story begins in the English summer of 1935, on the hottest day of the year. With the threat of World War II looming, Briony Tallis and her family live a life of privileged luxury in their vast Victorian-Gothic mansion. Briony, an aspiring writer, is a girl with a vivid imagination. After a series of catastrophic misunderstandings, she accuses Robbie Turner, the housekeeper’s son and her sister Cecelia’s lover, of a crime he never committed. This accusation destroys Robbie and Cecelia’s budding love and dramatically changes the course of life for all involved.
