Februari film bij Het Witte Paard: Fremont 2024

Every last Wednesday of the month Het Witte Paard shows a film with a current theme. Before the film there is a suitable meal based on the film.

Donya, a 20-year-old Afghan refugee, works at a Fortune Cookies factory in San Francisco. A former translator for the U.S. Army in Afghanistan, she struggles to sleep and feels lonely. Her routine is turned upside down when her boss assigns her to write messages and predictions. Her desire is aroused and she decides to put a special message in one of the cookies and let fate take its course…

The stylized Fremont is the fifth feature film by Iranian Babak Jalali, who received the Tiger Award in Rotterdam in 2016 for his Radio Dreams. Jalali was inspired by makers such as Aki Kaurismäki and the early films of Jim Jarmusch. The dry humor and the very minimalist acting make the film strange.

It is admirable how Jalali manages to address heavy, topical issues without getting bogged down in heavy social realism. He shows both the shared grief and the diversity of the thousands of Afghans who fled their homeland and now have to build a new life in the United States.
