Extratonal Special #4.2 - Illustration Connections
Not all connections between performance and illustration have been fully explored. On the occasion of the Rotterdam Illustration Festival, the Platform for Extratonality has put together an evening to bring us closer to this connection.
Three acts are presented that highlight this cross-pollination. The evening begins with the results of the Graphic Notation Workshop, followed by Happy Fuji News, a surreal live-improvised "film" of 201 wood engravings by Eric Kinny. The performance is accompanied by music by Raphaël Desmarets and voices by various artists, and tells the story of a guide at the foot of Mount Fuji, who struggles with negative Tripadvisor reviews.
In addition, interstellar will be presented, a joint performance by video artist Video Boy, illustrator Jacco Jansen and musician Pietro Frigato. This act explores themes of desire, hope and love in abandoned spaces, combining different media to tell stories of resistance and togetherness.
DRW, a web app developed by Kamo and Chae, allows the audience to create interactive drawings that are converted into visuals in real time for live coding performances. The musical accompaniment is provided by Logosamphia, the alter ego of audio artist Sadra Hemati, known for his energetic and chaotic live sets.
