Een lezing met schubben

Anne Broeksma is a poet and nature journalist who became so obsessed with pangolins that she traveled the world for seven years to find, protect and write about them.

This resulted in the much-discussed book A story with scales: a search for the strangest and most endangered mammal on earth (Uitgeverij Atlas Contact, 2024). The book also shows that anyone can be a naturalist, as long as the curiosity about your subject is great enough.

In A Lecture with Scales, Anne takes you on a journey through the wonderful world of these beautiful, endearing, elusive tree dragons, which are becoming increasingly difficult to find in the wild due to poaching, but which provide special stories and myths wherever they appear.

For centuries, especially Europeans who went to Asia and Africa did not know exactly which animal they saw there. Was it an 'East Indian Scaled Lizard', a 'Taywan Devil' or perhaps a mammal? And what exactly is the difference between pangolins and armadillos?

Using specimens from the museum collection, Anne will explain it to you. Is there still a future for pangolins and what do they have to do with the corona pandemic? What is certain: after the lecture you will have a new favorite animal. And those fans can really use pangolins.
