Counter-forensics - Responding to Police Violence
This Research Night focuses on the developments in the case of Sammy Baker, who died as a result of police violence. The London research group Forensic Architecture (FA) and their Berlin sister organisation Forensis continue their collaboration with the Nieuwe Instituut, based on previous research with Argos, platform for investigative journalism.
Counter forensics is used to detect and expose human rights violations. It is a form of investigation in which citizens adopt and use the methods of forensic investigation (of evidence in criminal cases) to verify and, if necessary, refute official investigation results.
On April 24, speakers from FA, Forensis, INDEX and Controle Alt Delete will share their insights on the murder of Sammy Baker, together with members of Sammy's family. They will discuss Sammy's case and other cases of police violence in Europe. They will address technical research practices, activism, advocacy and the search for accountability. How do we make police violence visible and address it? How can technical research and experiential expertise strengthen each other? And how can designers and researchers contribute to exposing systemic injustice?
This Research Night follows Evidencing the Police Killing of Sammy Baker.
