About the Concert

In The Longest Night, Chamber Choir Ilmatar celebrates the winter solstice with a musical ode to the return of the light. Under the direction of Imre Ploeg, the choir presents a varied program with music from Western, Northern, and Eastern Europe, as well as the Middle East. Syrian-Armenian singer Ibrahim Kevo and the New European String Trio add extra depth to this special evening.

The concert takes you from quiet reflection to a joyful conclusion. The program includes pieces by Francis Poulenc, Ola Gjeilo, and Valentin Silvestrov, traditional folk songs from Romania, the Czech Republic and Ukraine, and specially arranged Kurdish, Assyrian and Armenian songs about light and birth. The candlelight during the performance symbolizes hope and renewal during the darkest night of the year.
