BV Vastgoed Toneelgroep Maastricht / Michel Sluysmans
Toneelgroep Maastricht presents BV Vastgoed, a contemporary adaptation of David Mamet's Glengarry Glen Ross. Jibbe Willems translates this black comedy about money-driven struggle.
At the BV Vastgoed real estate agency, the management subjects the employees to a sales competition. The top two salespeople get a bonus, the rest are fired. This creates a battle in which only the strongest survive. In sharp, witty dialogue, Mamet portrays a desperate arena of people forced to be winners at the expense of losers. The play was awarded the Pulitzer Prize and received critical acclaim.
After the theater hits Augustus: Oklahoma (2024) and De Kersentuin (2023), Michel Sluysmans once again directs a modern interpretation of a well-known theater classic. Mamet wrote his piece in 1982, at the beginning of the neoliberal era. More than 40 years later, that era is on its last legs. In Jibbe Willems' translation , BV Vastgoed becomes a hilarious and sad portrait of people stuck in a world they helped create. A lonely world that revolves around money, an empty world where selfishness is considered a prerequisite for success and altruism a weakness. Because whoever does not eat will be eaten.
