About the book:

Gerard Ouweneel (1937) developed a passion for harriers in general and for brown harriers in particular in his early teens. In June 1947, on holiday with his parents on Texel, a Staatsbosbeheer guide led the excursion participants along nests of both the Montagu's harrier and the brown harrier during a tour of De Muy. That event was a guiding principle. Since then, the brown harrier has been a common thread throughout the author's three-quarter century-long birdwatching career. At first, he looked specifically at them in excursion areas around his birthplace and youthful hometown of Rotterdam, including the legendary nature reserve De Beer. Afterwards, he followed them in the Low Countries and then in Europe and beyond. Ouweneel wrote about them in magazines such as Limosa, De Takkeling, In Vogelvlucht and Sterna. He gained most of his experiences in the Delta. Partly thanks to the restoration of old creeks, the Hoeksche Waard, a writer's residential area, became a breeding stronghold. In describing his research results in the Delta as well as within and outside Europe, Ouweneel has an open eye for the setting in which hen harriers live and the changing world that the species had to cope with and still has to cope with.
