Arabische Nacht

The hottest day of the year, according to the news. The eighth, ninth and tenth floors of an apartment building have no water. It disappears somewhere on the seventh. Although there is no leakage anywhere…

Arabian Nights is a hypermodern fairy tale with classic ingredients. Desire, jealousy, fear and lust take possession of the characters. After a long day at work, the beautiful Franziska falls asleep on the couch. That happens every night, but today something different suddenly happens: three men try to kiss her in succession. That has strange consequences. Caretaker Lomeier suddenly finds himself in a desert. Next-door neighbor Peter is locked in a bottle. And Kalil kissed her by accident, but is caught by his beloved Fatima, who chases him like a fury… Playfully and enchantingly, writer Roland Schimmelpfennig lets his characters move through this wonderful story. They are five lonely individuals, but they dream a shared dream.

Roland Schimmelpfennig (1967) is one of the most important contemporary playwrights in Germany and far beyond. He was a journalist in Istanbul before he devoted himself to theatre. In his many dramas he likes to experiment with different narrative techniques. In Arabian Nights the novel and the play seem to shake hands. The characters are part of the story, but each is also a narrator.
