Alexa, doe de deur open

During the COVID pandemic, Alexa decided to teach at a juvenile detention center. Within the confines of the facility, she befriended and got to know boys better. After a while, she wanted to do what seemed impossible — throw the door open for them in one fell swoop.

She began to wonder why that couldn't just be done. Would those boys actually walk outside? Or would they — knowing what awaits them — perhaps prefer to stay inside the big concrete? Statistics show that 80% of boys who serve a sentence, end up back in prison within 4 years. It is more than clear that something is not working. But what is? How can it be done differently?

In the theatre performance 'ALEXA, open the door' Alexa addresses these kinds of questions in her own unique way, based on her personal experiences. Together with the audience she investigates the sense and nonsense of punishment and penance, the shared social responsibility to prevent repetition and, just as important, the liberating answers.
