Alabaster De Plume
Alabaster DePlume at BIRD Rotterdam
Alabaster DePlume is a British saxophonist, composer and activist who uniquely intertwines music and poetry. Known for his unorthodox approach, he often enriches his performances with anecdotes and poetry, always putting the human before the product. His compositions range from velvety sounds to wild, punky improvisations, with a good dose of chaos and adventure.
DePlume began his musical journey as a teenager in a rock band that deliberately avoided the conventional 4/4 time signature. He later lived with a group of “chaotic guitarists” at the legendary 'Dark Manor' in Manchester, which further influenced his creative direction. His debut album To Cy & Lee: Instrumentals Vol. 1 (released on the renowned International Anthem label) received wide critical and peer acclaim, and his music was even sampled by Bon Iver.
In 2022, he released the double album Gold, recorded in London, where he invited new musicians every day for two weeks. The only rules: no rehearsals beforehand and no listening back afterwards. This resulted in seventeen hours of unconventional, haunting music that DePlume himself shaped into a collage of poetic songs.
With his new mini-album Cremisan: Prologue To A Blade and his debut as a writer in the book Looking For My Value: Prologue To A Blade he further expands his artistic horizon. His work is a constant search for vulnerability, identity and meaning, in which he opens himself up again and again to the unexpected and the moment.
Alabaster DePlume brings his unpredictable, experimental sound to BIRD on May 26, where music and poetry merge in a live experience that respects no conventions.
